Aleck Graeme Thomson

West Kent Mind trustee Aleck Thomson sadly died on 23 July 2018. I first met Aleck in the summer of 2011 and shortly afterwards, in September 2011, he joined our board. At that time Aleck was about to retire early from his position as a senior civil servant at the Home Office. It was clear right from the outset that his work and life experiences were going to be invaluable to West Kent Mind. Aleck’s expertise in governance and policy development meant that he quickly became the leading light in guiding and supporting West Kent Mind to gain the highest possible grades in our mandatory quality audits. Aleck had an excellent understanding of our sector and the challenges that we face. He also brought great personal insight into mental health problems and their impact.

Aleck was a strategic thinker and his contributions to board discussions and our planning awaydays were always well considered, thoughtful and sometimes thought provoking. He was a deeply compassionate man and this really shone through everything he did and said. In spite of being diagnosed with terminal cancer within a few short months of joining West Kent Mind, Aleck continued to live his life to the full and continued to give his time and energy to support our charity.

Aleck will be very much missed by everyone who knew him. All of us at West Kent Mind are truly grateful to have known him and proud that he chose to support West Kent Mind.
