Running on the Mind

Ray Ellis, a 63 year old Grandad, has been running to raise funds for Sevenoaks Area Mind.  Despite physical illness now preventing Ray from completing the 2015 Brighton Marathon his achievements to date are incredible AND you can still donate to our West Kent mental health charity at

Ray has a life-long experience of depression and says,

“I am a runner. Running is known to help with wellbeing.  At the moment I am unable to run due to physical illness. This is very disappointing because running helps with my mental health and I set myself this challenge of running over 800 miles to raise awareness of mental health and much needed funds for Sevenoaks Area Mind, my local mental health charity.  If you are interested in my continuing journey with this challenge please do read my blog at  and of course if you are able please do donate via my justgiving site. Thank you.”

So far, Ray has run many, many miles in training and also completed the following:

  • 7 September – Weald St George’s 10k, 6.2 miles
  • 28 September – Tonbridge Half Marathon, 13.1 miles
  • 19 October – Highway 10k, Orpington, 6.2 miles
  • 8 November – Poppy Half Marathon, Bexhill, 13.1 miles

  • 8 February – Wokingham Half Marathon, 13.1 miles
  • 16 March – Sevenoaks 10k, 6.2 miles
  • 29 March – Paddock Wood Half Marathon, 13.1 miles

Ray says,

“Once I am back to full physical health, I plan on finding other races to run to replace those I have been forced to withdraw from.”

Jenny Godfrey, Community Development Director, says,

“Ray’s achievements and his determination to continue are inspirational.  He not only raises awareness for our charity and mental health but also of the link between mental and physical health.  We are very grateful to Ray and wish him a speedy recovery.”
