Coping with Life

Does the way you think affect the way you feel?

Perhaps thinking about the future makes you anxious. Or thoughts about the past make you depressed. Or your harsh inner critic makes you feel bad about yourself. But it doesn’t have to be like that!

Announcing Coping with Life, two new programmes to help you challenge unhelpful thinking and behaviour and make positive changes in your life. ‘Managing Depression’ and ‘Managing Stress and Anxiety’ are each programmes of six 90-minute psychoeducational classes held at locations in Ashford, Edenbridge, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks.

How does it work?

Coping with Life is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles. CBT is a form of psychology that has impressive evidence for its effectiveness and this programme follows the thinking behind CBT. It will help you to identify unhelpful thought patterns which, together with certain behaviours, serve to maintain problems rather than cure them. You will learn new skills that are proven to be effective in helping you to manage or cure problematic moods and behaviour.

Coping with Life is a programme of classes and not a therapy group, so we will not ask you to disclose sensitive or personal material. We will use case studies as examples.

What will I learn?

By the end of the programme you will:

  • have a good understanding of stress and anxiety or depression
  • understand how your thinking affects your mood and behaviour
  • understand how negative moods and behaviours are maintained
  • be able to challenge unhelpful thinking
  • develop and use a range of strategies to help you manage mood and behaviour
What else do I need to know?

There is no charge for the group, however we ask for your commitment to complete the programme. Coping with Life is not suitable if you are already receiving CBT, counselling or another psychological therapy. The programme is designed for adults of 18 and over, though applicants aged 16 – 17 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

After we have received your referral we will arrange a telephone assessment with the programme leader. If it seems that Coping with Life is not the right kind of help, we will try to signpost you to alternative sources of support.

Note that Coping with Life is not designed for people wanting to learn basic CBT skills in order to help others. Please contact us if this is something you are interested in as we may be able to help.
