Laura, project lead, tells how clients untangle doubts about their knitting skills and purl their way to creativity!

Can you tell us what the Beginners to Knitters group is?

Beginners to Knitters is exactly what it says on the tin – learning to knit! I have been knitting for more than 10 years and love sharing this creative skill as a way to make clothes that suit your body. This was a 6 month class that started with the very basics of learning about the different types of tools, variety of yarn, wool and materials. By the end of the course attendees had made a baby jumper!

What sessions have you run so far and what have these sessions involved?

This programme started in 2023 and we began with the basics of knitting and materials. We moved on to how to read a pattern, how to knit in the round, how to knit cables and finally how to make a jumper. Sessions usually included a lesson and then practice, and of course lots of chat and support. Participants shared what was going on in their lives and asked after each other each week.

How does the service support good mental health and wellbeing?

The weekly meeting provided consistency for many people and this is a huge support to mental wellbeing. Learning a new skill gave everyone confidence and I loved seeing how excited participants were with their progress and abilities.

Could anyone attend the group?

Yes, the group was open to anyone that was eager to learn and wanted to improve their mental wellbeing.

What was your favourite thing about working with this group?

I loved the enthusiasm and kindness everyone brought. I love that the group has continued to meet socially at the same time each week to support each other!
