Penny, Changing Pace lead, talks about these exciting running groups
Can you tell us what the Changing Pace group is?
It is a fun and sociable running group (beginners welcomed) that is about getting people outside and into the fresh air to support both their mental and physical well-being. We are adapting the NHS couch to 5k approach to support clients on their journey.
What sessions have you run so far and what have these sessions involved?
We currently have sessions in both Tonbridge and Sevenoaks, and we have just started a group running from Tunbridge Wells. These sessions have involved everyone getting to know one another, sharing of interests, working flexibly with all abilities. We are wonderfully supported by a group of DBS checked volunteers so we may offer more support within the group.
How does the service support good mental health and wellbeing?
The group is a brilliant way to encourage people to step outside their front door, get some fresh air and commit to improving their mental and physical health. They are taking control of their day, learning a new hobby and meeting new people in a safe space.
Can anyone attend the group?
Yes, anyone can attend that is able to walk and have the ability to run.
What’s your favourite thing about working with this group?
Meeting new people and finding out how interesting they are and seeing their growth mentally and physically week in week out. I love seeing how the clients support one another on their journey and meet up independently to continue their progress.
