This week we’re celebrating Volunteers Week and taking time to thank our amazing volunteers

Today, we’re sharing Jaz’s story of volunteering at our online Arts and Minds group.

1. How long have you been volunteering, and what drew you to this role?
I’ve been volunteering in the online Arts & Minds group since August 2024 and have absolutely loved it! I was drawn to this role through my love of art and the importance of accessible online spaces.

2. What does volunteering mean to you personally?
Volunteering at West Kent Mind has given me invaluable insight into the struggles of those facing mental health problems. Seeing people’s resilience is inspiring, and it’s rewarding to witness how much participants benefit from the sessions.

3. What kind of volunteering do you do, and what does a typical session look like?
I assist the wellbeing worker in our online art group. We suggest creative projects, but encourage members to explore whatever inspires them. Sessions are full of creativity, open discussion, and support. Members often connect and share coping strategies.

4. What’s been the most rewarding part of your experience?
Hearing feedback from group members after completing their 12 sessions is incredibly rewarding. Many rediscover a passion for art, often after being discouraged in school. We focus on letting go of judgement and embracing all forms of self-expression.

5. How do you think your volunteering makes a difference?
The group helps build lasting, supportive connections. It also boosts self-confidence as members create art they’re proud of and feel free to be themselves without pressure.

6. How has volunteering impacted your own wellbeing or growth?
Taking time each week to slow down and be creative has benefitted me, too. Hearing members’ experiences and learning what helps them has been eye-openin, I believe everyone can benefit from shared positive coping strategies.
