West Kent Mind is looking for men in the Sevenoaks district to become Peer Mentors and use their lived experience to support with their mental health.
Have you experienced mental health problems and come through difficult times? Your experiences could make a real difference to someone who is facing similar struggles today.
West Kent Mind is inviting men who live or work in the Sevenoaks district to apply for its free 10-week Peer Mentor Training Programme, beginning on Wednesday 30 September at the Sevenoaks Wellbeing Centre.
Peer Mentors use their own lived experience of mental health problems to offer hope, encouragement and understanding to others. They aren’t therapists or counsellors – they’re people who know what it’s like and can provide support through empathy, listening and shared experience.
The interactive programme is based on the nationally recognised Peer2Peer approach and includes group discussions, storytelling, skills practice and reflective learning in a safe and supportive environment. Following the training, participants will have the opportunity to volunteer across West Kent Mind services and in the wider community, helping others while continuing their own wellbeing journey.
As one previous participant said:
“I really valued being able to share and tell my own journey and not be judged.”
Another shared:
“The programme has given me knowledge and strength and helped me to focus on wellbeing and mindfulness.”
And perhaps the greatest impact is summed up by this participant:
“I now feel like I could give someone hope by being a peer mentor.”
The course is fully funded by Sevenoaks District Council and is free to attend. Places are limited to just eight participants, helping to create a welcoming and supportive group where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow together.
