“I’ve found a passion for life again, thanks to West Kent Mind…”

“A year ago, I was at breaking point. I hadn’t left the house in eight months. I felt completely alone, depressed, and I genuinely considered taking my own life.

But then, something changed. A kind nurse took the time to talk to me and gently encouraged me to reach out to West Kent Mind. It was a lifeline.

I nervously signed up for their Creative Minds programme, Silk Painting. I remember arriving early on the first day, but I was so terrified I nearly turned around and went straight back home. As I stood outside, frozen with fear, a lovely woman from the group noticed me and said, “Just come in and watch this week, take things at your own pace.” Her gentle encouragement helped me build up the courage to walk into the room. That small act of kindness changed everything.

By week three, I was actually excited to go. One session, I even helped the Wellbeing Worker set up; I felt useful for the first time in years. The six-month programme gave me structure, joy, and something to look forward to each week. It truly became the highlight of my week, a safe space to connect and express myself. West Kent Mind helped me build confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Since then, everything has changed. I’ve made amazing friends, we meet up every week, and soon I’ll be cooking lunch for all of them, nine people!

I’ve also joined the Groovin’ Well dance group, and I’m running a scrapbooking workshop for West Kent Mind soon. To think that a year ago I couldn’t even leave the house, and now I’m doing things like this in front of people! I never imagined any of this would be possible.

Thanks to West Kent Mind, I’ve found my spark again. I’ve rediscovered life.”
