The West Kent Mind Creative Minds programme, funded by the National Lottery, is now in its second year. The programme is designed to help individuals tap into their creative potential through various artistic and expressive activities. Over the course of a six-month Dungeons & Dragons engagement, 12 clients have had the opportunity to play weekly, build a community of like-minded friends, and focus on their mental wellbeing, all with the support of West Kent Mind wellbeing worker Andy, and Dragon Masters Dan and Mike. The live event served as a testament to the group’s growth, showcasing the power of creativity and collaboration.
“Watching our clients come together to create and tell a story in real time on the stage was incredible,” said Mike D’souza, the programme Dungeon Master. “This event demonstrated their wonderful teamwork, imaginations and courage to perform in front of an audience. It was inspiring to see the participants fully embrace the role playing experience and engage with the audience in such an interactive and meaningful way.”
As the game unfolded, the audience was taken on a journey of epic quests, fantasy creatures, and heroic moments, all improvised in true D&D fashion. The players, many of whom had little or no experience with live performances before, demonstrated remarkable skill in character development, improvisation, and storytelling.
“I can’t believe we got to play D&D on a live theatre stage,” said Emily, one of programme participants. “I was able to express my creativity in ways I didn’t realise were possible. The support from the team and my newfound friends has been incredible, I can’t emphasise enough about how much this has benefit me.”
The event was not only an unforgettable showcase of the participants’ creativity but also a celebration of the Creative Minds programme’s ability to bring people together, demonstrating that creativity is a powerful tool for personal development, driving confidence, and building community. One D&D participant said “We’re in a group chat and that’s been extremely positive for me. I don’t have to type in to say I’m having a bad day. It’s a safe space where if I need to reach out, I can. Everyone in the group is so lovely.”
