Coping with Loneliness

Christmas isn’t a busy, social time for everyone. For some, loneliness can be particularly difficult during the festive season. It’s a feeling that many of us have experienced, and finding comfort in knowing that you’re not alone in this can be reassuring.

Remember, you are not alone, and there are steps you can take to improve your wellbeing.

1. Keep in touch! Regular chats with friends and family can help to combat loneliness. Talking to someone can really help when you feel alone – and also it will strengthen your relationship with the person you contact as most of us love hearing from others. Being more sociable might also make it easier to reach out when you notice any signs of loneliness.

2. Join a group! Being part of a group or club is a great way to connect with and meet new people that you share interests with. Look for groups to join in person or online. Think of activities you would like to try, there are so many groups available these days. Remember there are a lot of people who feel like you, you’re not alone. How about giving a group a go to start the new year by making new connections? Our groups are a great way to learn something new but also make connections and interact with others. Feel free to look at some of these here.

3. Connect with others or volunteer to help. Think about people you know who might be feeling lonely and try to connect with them. Taking the focus out from you in service of others can help you feel more connected and bring deep-rooted value to your life. Volunteering is also a great avenue to this and you can see the benefits in real time.

4. Sharing your feelings is important, you could try our counselling service or other therapies if things are really difficult as they can give you professional support.
